Nor let it be thought that any devotion to paleontology -- to the 'stocks and stones' of the sneerers at science -- will ever lessen our love for the fresh and beautiful in existing nature. . . . As the existing throws new light on the extinct, so the extinct adds fresh interest to the existing; and thus, to the paleontologist, the study of life becomes not only a more exciting pursuit, but a higher and more ennobling theme.

WEEKEND TRIPS
THE"FOSSIL FINDERS" SERIES
- Half- to Full-Day Fossil-Collecting Events -
Beginning this summer, we've instituted a new approach to weekend trips: we're running them as a reward to Guild members who have participated in three or more other events in the past twelve months. Costs per participant are pitched as low as possible, to just barely cover the Guild's operating and administrative costs for these tours. In other words, these trips are designed primarily as a hearty (and fun and educational) "thank you!" for NHEG members who've directly contributed to the vibrancy of our organization.
Actively participating NHEG members are encouraged to request a prospectus that delineates the itineraries, costs, lodging options, and transportation arrangements for the trips listed below.

-Wisconsin's Baraboo Range and Driftless Area. Friday 24 -Sunday 26 October 2008. Last year, after we ran our umpteenth version of this trip, we planned to give it a break for at least a couple of years. But here, by Guild-member request, is our newly added 2008 version, which includes transportation by minivan. This favorite itinerary includes a look at one of the Badger State's best drumlin fields, a Louis Sullivan architectural masterpiece, Devil's State Park, Parfrey's Glen, the Cave of the Mounds, and the Platteville Mining Museum. We'll explore the fascinating Precambrian, Paleozoic, and Ice Age geology of this scenic region and explore its varied plant communities during the height of the fall-foliage season. Guild Proficiency Points: 300. Maximum number of participants: 5. Hiking up to 3 miles per day in hilly terrain and in mostly wooded locales.

Sunday 2 November 2008, 1:00-3:30 p.m. Now a certified hit with Guild participants, this sequel to our springtime Loop tour is now one of our annual events. The tour begins with an ascent of the 100-story John Hancock Center, where we'll get a panoramic view of three states from the Hancock Observatory. It's the perfect place to discuss the Windy's City's geologic origins and the evolution of the Lake Michigan coastline. Then we'll take a walk down North Michigan Avenue, to explore the Magnificent Mile's architectural landmarks and the ornamental stone that adorns them. We'll find fossils from a vanished sea, evidence of continental collision and ancient mountain building, and signature examples of Chicagoland's turn-of-the-century terra-cotta artisans. Then we'll stroll into Racine's downtown, where we'll find nothing less than an open-air museum of exotic ornamental stone -- including rock types that originated in the Earth's mantle, and those that, at 3.6 billion years old, are among the oldest remnant's of the Earth's crust. We will also search for evidence of how southwestern Wisconsin's challenging climate conspires to degrade the appearance and functionality of these materials.(Please note the standard Guild refund policy.) - Indiana Dunes State Park, Part I. Sunday 3 August 2008, 9:30 a.m.-noon. Here's another perennial summertime favorite. Our focus for the day is the less trammeled parkland that is the elder sibling of the adjacent National Lakeshore. (Please note the standard Guild refund policy.) Guild Proficiency Points: 100.Hiking up to 1 mile in firm soil to loose sand, and on hilly, exposed to forested terrain.
